The OTHM Level 4 Award in Principles and Practice of Lip-reading Teaching is designed to develop learners’ understanding of the principles and practices of lip-reading so they can apply their knowledge in a range of educational contexts. It focuses on the specialist knowledge, understanding, and techniques required to become an effective teacher of lip-reading.

This qualification is built around six official learning outcomes that develop both subject knowledge and specialist teaching capability in lip-reading.

  • Understand the physiological processes and psychological functions of hearing

  • Understand the effects of acquired hearing loss

  • Understand ways in which amplification and lip-reading are optimised by those with hearing loss

  • Understand the phonology of spoken English and its application to lip-reading learning and teaching

  • Use specialist techniques and methodology for teaching lip-reading

  • Understand assistive aids and services available to those with acquired hearing loss

Course content

Who should attend

This course is intended for adult learners preparing for or developing a specialist role in lip-reading teaching, particularly those who meet OTHM’s entry profile and want focused professional development.

  • Learners aged 19 and above

  • Aspiring teachers of lip-reading

  • Practitioners wanting specialist lip-reading teaching knowledge

  • Those working with adults with acquired hearing loss

  • Learners with relevant vocational or academic backgrounds

  • Mature learners with relevant experience, subject to centre approval

Course requirements

Learners must meet OTHM’s entry profile, which includes age, English language ability, relevant background, and the core skills needed to study and teach effectively.

  • Be 19 or older, have GCSE English Language at Level 9-4 or equivalent, hold a relevant qualification ideally at minimum Level 3 in their specialist area, have good unaided hearing, and possess minimum core literacy, language, numeracy, and ICT skills

  • Alternatively, mature learners over 21 with relevant experience may be accepted by the delivery centre; learners from non-majority English-speaking countries must provide evidence of English language competency

Assessments

The qualification is assessed by the centre, internally quality assured, and externally verified by OTHM. To achieve a pass, learners must meet all learning outcomes and assessment criteria through coursework.

  • Research Log

  • Research Evaluation Report of approximately 1000 words, including a reference list, covering LO1 and LO2

  • Case Study of approximately 1200 words covering LO3 and LO4

  • 15-minute Presentation with approximately 1000 words of speaker notes covering LO5 and LO6
