The OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Law is designed to help learners develop knowledge and understanding of core legal principles while building foundational professional and research skills. What you will learn

You will study the official Level 4 law units and develop knowledge, understanding, and skills across legal systems, legal research, and key areas of substantive law.

  • Understand how laws are created in England and Wales, including court hierarchy, case law, and legislation

  • Develop legal research, legal citation, academic writing, and independent study skills for law

  • Understand the requirements of a binding agreement, contractual terms, vitiating factors, and breach remedies

  • Examine partnership law, company formation, limited liability, directors, and agency powers in business structures

  • Understand constitutions, separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty, and judicial review

  • Understand actus reus, mens rea, criminal offences, and key defences to criminal conduct

Course requirements

Entry is intended for learners aged 18 and above with suitable prior qualifications or relevant experience. Centres review each learner’s background to confirm readiness for the programme.

  • Relevant Level 3 Diploma, or GCE Advanced level in 2 subjects, or an equivalent qualification; mature learners over 21 with relevant experience may also be considered

  • Learners should be aged 18 or above, and non-majority English-speaking country applicants must provide evidence of English language competency

Assessments

Assessment is based on achievement of the specified learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit. Units are internally assessed by the centre and externally verified by OTHM.

  • All units are assessed through coursework

  • Assessment is criterion referenced against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria

  • Learners must achieve a pass in each unit by meeting all required criteria

  • Unit assessment formats include coursework or portfolio of evidence, typically around 3000 words per unit

Progression

Successful completion of this qualification supports further academic development in law and related study. Learners may progress within the OTHM law suite or seek university progression opportunities.
